10 Times More Likely to Stay Together Forever

Written by Archetype Wealth Content Team | October 16, 2019

I’m about to get married and I’m writing about divorce. One of the biggest reasons for divorce is money. This is true for couples across the board: blue collar, white collar, or no collar. It’s great to have money but it is awful if money has you.

A recent survey from Policygenius surveyed over 2,000 U.S. adults in relationships and discovered that one in five couples saw their significant other as financially irresponsible. This led to the finding that couples are 10 times more likely to split up if they viewed their partner as financially irresponsible.

I am 25 years old, getting married next week, and do not want divorce to end our story. Although I do not have 20 years of marriage wisdom to offer, I am fresh off some great marriage counseling that helped address some of these conversations. Also, being in the financial services industry, my fiancé and I have had ample conversations surrounding money, debt, investments, and spending habits.

The best thing we have ever done regarding finances is inviting trusted people in to help us.  These can be challenging conversations leading to confusion and frustration. It should be no surprise that differences exist when it comes to how we spend money. We are all different, we were raised differently, and we see the world from a different perspective. But we had to get on the same page. If we don’t get a handle on money, money could get a hold of us and tear us apart.

So we have brought in outsiders that we know and trust. They offer another perspective that often leads to new discoveries. They helped create an environment that is less about who is right and more about how we can both improve. There is much to learn, and wisdom will come through experience. My fiancé and I had our differences but one thing we share in common: we are not going to do this on our own.

Archetype not only wants to help you, but it also practices what it preaches. I am so grateful we have experienced advisors to lean on. We are a team that works together and a team that has been constructed very carefully that includes both men and women, young and wise. We understand the value of different perspectives and know that the best way to serve families is to utilize those different viewpoints. Our greatest joy as a company comes when families thrive as a result of our service.
