Thriving Family Principle: Don't Quit

RE-TIRE
A 75 year-old client gave a keynote speech recently claiming that the last 10 years have been the most fulfilling of his life. He hasn’t had a salary or played golf once for 10 years. So, why is he so happy?
This client, let’s call him “Joe”, was worried when he retired. Joe spent 35 years as an investment banker and private equity fund manager. He wanted to do more non-profit work, but was worried that his skills and personality wouldn’t translate. He’s not a “hugger” and non-profits don’t need a lot of investment banking help.
As Joe talked about the last 10 years, he was amazed at how well his skills did translate. He helped two non-profits start from scratch, another with its’ investment policy, and another with a workout of its’ financial situation.
Joe said that he now considers the first 35 years of his career as training for the last 10 and how ever more years God gives him.
If you are nearing “retirement”, what is your plan to “re-tire” and put new tread on your tires to make the next miles your most meaningful?
At Archetype, we have a set of twelve principles designed to help families thrive across generations. Check out more blogs from our "Thriving Family Principles" series.
